Information needed on TomTom GPS?
I’m purchasing a GPS for a Christmas gift. The one I’m looking at is a TomTom One/3rd Edition. If anyone has one, I’d like to hear your comments on it. Thanks!
I have a TomTom ONE. I think it’s a “Second Edition” but I’m not sure as the packaging just says “US and Canada”. Anyway, I’m quite happy with the device itself, although I did have a few issues at first with their support. Their on-line support is less than stellar but the biggest issue I had was with the registration process. I had to return the first unit I purchased and when I went to register the replacement unit I was blocked because my email account was already associated with the original unit’s serial number. After a couple of calls they fixed that issue for me, but just like most call centers, I had to keep calling until I was connected with a cooperative tech support person.
The device is quite simple to use, the directions are quite accurate, and the maps are fairly up-to-date. My absolute favorite feature of the TomTom ONE, and the reason I chose it over the Garmin, is the PC interface. It’s great for trip planning, loading favorites, and just plain getting used to what the device can do. When connected to a PC via the USB cable you can manipulate all the TomTom features using a mouse and keyboard on your computer’s monitor.
The suction cup windshield mount does not work in cool or cold weather. This means that it will not adhere to a cold windshield on a summer evening but this issue is not unique to TomTom. I glued a cell phone belt clip to my dashboard and glued the cell phone belt clip button to the back of the TomTom. This works well. RAM makes various custom mounts for GPS units. The other issue I’ve had is that they push updates to your device when connected to the internet. I don’t like the latest update as it moved some of the menu items around, but you can’t roll-back like you can with Windows type software on your pc.
All in all, I’m quite satisfied with it as a car GPS.
