Some More Productive Options Than Watching TV Tonight

I think most people would be shocked if they realized just how much time they spend watching TV every day. Most people would think they watch an hour or two, but research by the Nielsen Company suggests that in the US an average person will watch 34 hours of television per week. It is just an average so you may not watch nearly as much as that, but people all over the country are watching that much and more in order for it to average out to that, which is shocking.

When TVs used to be big and bulky then people really only had one or two in the house so watching it used to be a family affair. However now that flat screen tellys have come out so they don’t take up much room, and the prices have come down, then people have a lot more of them in their houses. Now kids can watch whatever they want in their bedrooms, for as long as they want, because they are out of the prying eyes of their parents. Meanwhile the main TVs in the house are getting bigger and bigger, a 32 inch LCD TV is no longer good enough, or even a 42 inch TV, now people want 55 and even 60 inch TVs to watch their favorite shows on.

Unfortunately if you watch a lot of TV then that is stopping you from doing things which will get you active and help you to burn calories. People also like to eat while they watch TV, so I think our viewing habits are a big cause for the rise in obesity that we are seeing right now. But what kind of interesting things can you do instead of watching your favorite shows?

One of the best things you can do which will be a lot of fun is to try out a new hobby. There are so many different hobbies you can try that there is something for everyone, and even if they don’t get you physically active then at least they get you mentally active. Even with the most mundane hobby like stamp collecting then it has to be more rewarding that melting your brain in front of the TV all day. Some people might complain that they don’t have enough time to take up a new hobby though, but based on the figures we discussed earlier then if you cut down how much TV you watch then you could have 30 hours or more a week to dedicate to a new hobby. With that kind of time free each week then the world is your oyster and you could do anything from learning to speak a foreign language to even learning an instrument you have always wanted to.

Or another option would be to go back to school. Instead of hobbies then instead you could work on getting some new qualifications which could help you to get promoted at work or help you change career if you aren’t happy in your current one. If you hate the idea of actually attending classes then you can’t use that as an excuse to get out of it, you can do courses through distance learning now instead. So I don’t want to hear any excuses about not having time to do interesting things anymore, you only need at most an hour or two per night to watch your favorite shows, anything after that is just you being lazy!
