Items Essential When Applying For A Passport

The amount of documentation that is required to obtain a passport can be overwhelming for a first time applicant. The first time a passport is applied for, the applicant must apply in person at an approved application facility. Even though it looks like a lot of items are needed when Applying for a pass port, there are only six basic items required.

Filling out the application ahead of time can save time and frustrations, especially when using expedited pasport services. If filling out the application beforehand, do not sign it. It is required that the application is signed in front of an authorized agent. The form is called DS-11 and can be either picked up from an approved facility or printed online.

Next an applicant will need proof of United States citizenship. A certified birth certificate is the most frequently used document but certifications of citizenship, naturalization certificate or an old passport are all accepted. Secondary documents can be used in a case where there are no primary documents available but this is the case for very few citizens. Social Security cards are not considered proof of citizenship.

For minors under the age of 16, proof of guardianship is also needed. A certified birth certificate or adoption decree can be used. A court order of custody or guardianship may are also accepted. Both parents must approve a minor applying for a passport. The only exception is if one parent has legal proof of sole custody of the child.

Applicants will be asked for photo identification when submitting the application. A government issued ID such as a driver’s license or a Military ID card can be used. An applicant using an out-of-state driver’s license will need another form of ID that has as much information on it as possible. A parent applying with a minor under the age of 16 will need photo identification as well. All identification documentation will need to be photocopied. Most facilities will do the photocopies on-site but having some can help save time.

The requirements for a passport photo are strict. The safest way to guarantee a photo meets these requirements is to have it taken on-site. The requirements say that the photo has to be taken in the last six months showing a full view of the face against a white background.

The cost of a United States passport book for a first time applicant over the age of 16 is $135. For a book and card it is $165. This includes both the application fee and the execution fee. An execution fee is not charged for a renewal and the fees for a minor are cheaper.

Being prepared with all the requirements can make the process go much smoother and be less stressful. So when Applying for a pasport, make sure to bring a filled out application, proof of citizenship, proof of identification with photocopies, a photo that meets the requirements, and the amount required for the fees. For questions concerning special concerns, check with a local application center, especially if trying to use expedited USA passport services.
