Apple iPhone 8GB? Old Model?

I recently had a Blackberry Storm but had all kinds of problems and my phone company said I could choose between a Blackberry Bold or 8GB iPhone instead. I chose the iPhone but friends have told me that the 8GB is an old model that doesn’t have all the programs etc. that the new ones do? Is this correct? What will I be missing out on and what is so bad about this phone? And if you know what you are talking about please dumb it down a little because I don’t know much about technology… besides what bluetooth and a GPS is… :)
ps. this is in Australia but I’m sure it’s the same worldwide

well the old iphone has no video recording function and i think no compass but most of the new programs are also available for the old iphone via update
and if you jailbreak ur phone u can get free video recording software (i’d recommend cycorder)
but if u jailbreak a iphone u lose its guarantee
i think there’s a video recording program available in the appstore but it costs a bit

anyway, maybe u wont have all the programs (but im pretty sure u will have most of them) but u can still download a lot from the appstore and there are many free ones that are worth downloading

jailbreak = hacking the software so u can install external programs made by other users
