The 3 models in the HP LaserJet 1200 Printer series are the base model, C7044A, the 1200 SE, model C7047A, and the LaserJet 1200n. The 1200n is the bundle for networked set ups. The 1220 series uses the base or special edition 1200 printers, as well. Each printer in this series comes with HP LaserJet 1200 cartridges, which provides the best printing experience possible.

The 1220 model adds scanning and copying facilities to the HP LaserJet 1200 base printer. It, too, comes in a special edition version. Optionally, one can purchase a copy and scan peripheral, model number C7046A, as an accessory to the basic 1200.

HP is the company that invented laser printers for the mass market. They started way back in 1984. The LaserJet name was the name of the original laser printer for PCs. It had a ppm rate of eight and an eight MHz processor. The 128 kB of memory was shared with the controller.

Due to the limitations of memory technology at the time, the original LaserJet was unable to do graphics. By comparison, the modern 1200 prints photograph quality graphics. But to do this, the 1200 needs fifteen megs of hard disk space. The 1220 requires 160.

Porting an HP LaserJet 1200 printer can be done to a USB port. It can also use a parallel port that is bi directional and compliant with either the ECP or IEEE 1284 standards. These are the only acceptable ports.

In 1987 the LaserJet Series 2 was released by HP. This was the first tentative step towards a mass-market laser printer. The product targeted the small to medium size business market.

A half-size version of the Series Two was brought to market in the fall of 1989. The LaserJet IIP was a true consumer-level product. It was half the size of the original and sold for about half as much.

Print speed for the 1200 is the same whether the 1200 is outfitted as a 1220 or whether is an off-the shelf base unit. Legal-size paper prints at fourteen pages per minute. Letter-size paper prints at a page per minute faster.

The dedication of Hewlett-Packard to being environmentally responsible is impressive. The care begins in the design. And it continues throughout the life cycle of the product.

Another great feature of the HP environmental awareness program is how they handle toner. There is an Econo-Mode setting that can and should be used for internal documents. Save the good stuff for paying situations. Plastic pieces weighing more than 25g are marked for appropriate recycling. In addition to the Econo-Mode, there is a feature for manual duplex and a reducer that permits printing, on one page, two or more pages.

HP LaserJet 1200 toner and all laser toners are of special environmental concern. Hewlett-Packard offers a take-back solution at no cost in 25 or more countries world wide. Postage paid return envelopes are included with all HP LaserJet cartridge. Used cartridges are simply placed in the envelope and put in a mailbox. HP handles the recycling.
