Back in ancient time when dinosaurs still roamed the earth, (well actually it was the mid 1950s but most folks who actually understand what HDTV is probably consider that as ancient), a series of technical specifications and standards were created which defined modern day television. Outside of the addition of color and some other modifications, televisions were still being built using the systems developed way back then for the next 50 years.

The technology is known as analog. This same technology found it’s way into cameras, recording systems and other electronic gadgets. During the 1980s a committee, ATSC, was formed to advance television technology. Some years later (1996) the FTC formally adopted those ATSC recommendations and the race for digital television went to full speed ahead.

Analog would soon, (well not real soon actually about early 2000), be relegated to the scrap heap of history. During 2009 television owners in the United States were notified they would soon need a digital converter in order to continue using their analog sets.

And just like that HDTV, (high definition TV) became standard. Different systems are used in countries outside of the U.S. but the results are the same. The benefits of HDTV have been promised for years and now that they have arrived everyone wonders how they were able to spend hours watching that old analog stuff. Wide flat screens began to appear and the images were extremely sharp.

The old video flicker disappeared and the ghost images that haunted the old sets were gone. Unlike the wailing that was heard when old trusted machines like the typewriter and some other beloved devices were sent to the scrap heap, everyone seemed to praise HDTV.

If you have added a digital converter to your analog set than you have not yet appreciated HDTV. A trip to an electronics store or Wal Mart where they have walls of HDTVs displaying images so sharp you feel like you could go up and talk with the people displayed on the screens. Wide screens can be enormous but the images are as sharp as the smaller sets.

For most potential HDTV television set owners just understanding that HDTV is here to stay, at least until the next innovation comes along, seems to make them happy. However before a decision is made on the best set for your home there are more terms and some other basic knowledge that you should acquire.

As with any technology, HDTV is changing rapidly. You would do well to seek some current information before you make a purchase. Talk with the sales people at the electronic stores but be sure to get information from other sources as well. The internet is an excellent source of current information. Be cautious about buying a set that is too large for the room where it will be used. It is tempting to want one of those huge flat panel screens especially if you are a sport fan. But try to visualize what the screen will look like at the distance you will be using it at home.
