How do GPS phones work ?
Which phones allow you to input an address and show you a map of where you are and how to get to the destination address ?
Is this GPS service free or do the phone companies charge every time you use this maps service ?
Depends on the phone and plan you’re using. I don’t know much about other carriers but Verizon has VZ Navigator programed by RIM (Research In Motion) which can be use by most of their phones. You can use it for one day which will cost $3 or add it to your existing plan as a monthly charge for $10. It was “free” when you got the most expensive plan under your allotted minutes.
It may have changed since I used it but i think it did show a small map of the immediate area and the area your heading to. It relied strictly on the phone signal for information. I don’t think the terms changes much from carrier to carrier
The Droid, for example, has free (no charge no matter the plan) GPS powered by Google. It’s a hybrid using phone and satellite signals, and it will show maps, pics and street views of the addresses you input. You don’t even have to type it out. You can “tell” it where you would like to go and it will show you information it finds on the internet or in Google’s database. This is a more advanced smart-phone however requiring a $30 data plan.
