GPS-tracking your kid….insane much?

I just thought you’d enjoy this little anecdote:

Last night, my brother-in-law was over for dinner and told us about a child he’d met at his office (he’s a doctor) who had a strange-looking bracelet on her wrist. He asked her about it and she said her mom agreed not to have a microchip implanted in her if she agreed to wear a GPS-tracking bracelet. She’s not allowed to take it off and must have it turned on all the time, or else her mom will call the police.
Paranoid much?

Yeah, that’s paranoid. What’s especially disturbing is that her mom either would’ve been OK with the idea of having a microchip implanted (although GPS microchips don’t really exist, the chips in dogs and cats are RFID and need to be scanned from less than 12 inches away to be read) or thought it was an acceptable way to intimidate her child into wearing the bracelet. I can understand if the child had a mental condition and was prone to wandering off or something, but from what your brother said she seems to be both mentally healthy and old enough to go places on her own (and if she isn’t, her mom is SUPER paranoid!).

If that child was old enough to go places on her own (like 12+), I’d suggest either telling her that GPS-tracking microchips don’t exist and letting her get ideas about what to do next on her own, or else mention things like the possibility of wrapping aluminum foil around the GPS part (it’s metal, so it’ll probably effectively block the satellite signal) and ask her how exactly her mom knew she was wearing it, or knew who was wearing it, or what…. lol, good thing my parents weren’t able to try anything like that with me, I was a techie as a child, and I would’ve figured out a way to trick, disable, block, dismantle, reprogram, etc. that thing in a day or two.

Also, my personal problem is that if YOU can track your child with GPS, who else can? Computers and software can be hacked, so no matter what security precautions you take, it’s not inconceivable that some pedophile could hack the system and track your child as well, or pay someone else to do the hacking…
