Will an iphone without service work for gps use?
I do not wish to sign up with any cellular provider. I would like to buy an iphone from somewhere like eBay or amazon used, then download maybe an app or two and be able to use it for free after that. Will this be possible and if so what type of iphone would I need and what apps would be recomended? or what do I need to get my ipod touch to do it?
The GPS functions by reading signals from satellites, not from cell phone towers. You should be able to use the GPS function independently of the cellular network if you wish. You can do your apps download via wifi, so you want to be sure to get an iPhone that’s recent enough to be wifi-capable.
That said, there are MANY better phones than iPhones; they’re very poor quality in my experience. But if all you want is a GPS, then as along as the phone has that function available, and has wifi capability, you should be good to go.
