What should I do when I travel in Ho chi minh city,Vietnam?

I and my family plan to take a trip in Ho Chi Minh city,Vietnam this summer, but I don’t know information about this city much.I need somebody who traveled there give me some advices.
I should get a tour of travel agency or rent a car and discover the city ourselves?
are there GPS data for in car navigation for vietnam?
I would bring a net book and a GPS receiver
what are the most intersting places outside saigon? :)

By your name you sound Vietnamese ? . The city of Saigon although hectic is very easy to get around and traveling around is easy , how many in your group ? . A great , cheap and enjoyable way is to get a Cyclo rider to take you about , the majority of these people are genuine and are great to get as tour guides. You do not need a GPS at all as you will not be able to hire a car without a driver . Two great books to read are “The Rough Guide to Vietnam” & “The Lonely Planet” i prefer the Rough Guide it is more down to earth .
How long are you staying ? “Mui Nie” is the best beach in Vietnam and you can get a very cheap Taxi for the 4 hour drive and it is stunning . If you use Tourist agents “Sinh Cafe” is always pretty good . As i said if you get a cyclo rider he will solve any problems you have and will get you some great deals on purchases . You must go to the “Cu Chi Tunnels” they are special and the best way to get there is a Taxi , agree a price before you set off.
Have a Great Time !

p.s Be careful with the water and ice , it may sound silly but there are 2 types of ice . Get the expensive one as this bottled water frozen , the other is tap water (expensive means a few extra dong)
