Exactly How Big is a King Size Bed?
The king size bed is one of the most popular sizes amongst consumers. Encroachment will no longer pose a problem for couples with more than enough room to enjoy a comfortable and uninterrupted night’s sleep. With that said, can it be defined by a universal sizing?
Well there are subtle variations, with some models being slightly different. However, as a general rule they tend to shape up at 150 x 200 cm – certainly in the UK at least. Different territories have their own classifications for defining bed sizes, which complicates matters somewhat. For instance in the US and Australia king size beds are equivalent to a super king size in Britain – at around 180 x 200/210 cm. This can lead to a bit of a muddle amongst those looking to buy a bed. However, the most important thing is that the king size or super king size is usually the largest standard bed available. Whatever country you’re in and how the king size bed is measured (whether it’s 150 or 180 centimetres), the one guarantee in that it will be larger than both a standard double and a queen size bed.
For those who work in inches rather than centimetres the size is equivalent to 60 x 78 in the UK and 72 x 80 elsewhere. Additional size means extra work and materials, all of which is then converted into cost – so you will be spending a fair amount for your bed, maybe even hundreds of pounds. However, for most this is a price worth paying to enjoy a comfortable night’s sleep and the freedom to spread out in your own bed.
Of course there are options beyond the size of a bed that you may also want to consider. Design and construction plays a large part in how comfortable a mattress is, so don’t be afraid to test them out. For instance, you may have allergies relating to dust and other small particles. If you’re affected by this kind of allergy, you might want to consider investing in a hypoallergenic mattress to provide you with optimal comfort. Do your own tests in store to find out which ones best match what you are looking for. Whilst you may want to buy elsewhere, or even online if you find a better deal here, it’s always worth seeing if it is too soft or too hard, especially if you have a particular preference.
Sometimes you need to look beyond size alone to ensure that you have a mattress that offers optimal levels of comfort. A one size fits all model may not yet exist for the king size beds; however that isn’t to say that you won’t enjoy unrivalled comfort and room for manoeuvre. The difference between 150 x 200cm and 180 x 200 may not be insignificant; however, regardless of the size disparity you will still be assured space and comfort aplenty.
