ANSI Class 2 standards were developed for the safety and awareness of such employees as emergency and police personnel, utility and construction workers, fire fighters, road workers and airport employees who work the ramps. The class 2 standards are requirements for safety wear and accessories that are easily visible and attention attracting. Included in the instructions and standards for the safety wear and accessories are shirts, rain wear, vests, outerwear, safety vests and head gear. The class 2 calls to improve the chances of visibility in day, night or low light environments and conditions.
The ANSI, or American National Standards Institute, has been the administrating and coordinating standard bearer in the United States since its founding more than ninety years ago. The Institute was founded by engineering societies and government agencies. It remains a private, non-profit organization based on membership and supported by a constituency that is both public and private based.
The organization accredits other organizations that are in the business of developing standards and regulatory guidance on products such as safety vests. The standard developing organizations or SDO’s work mutually with the institute to develop voluntary regulations and principles that are agreed upon by consensus. The SDO’s are continuously held to a high standard of performance to remain qualified by the institute.
Institutional standards have been developed, reviewed and approved by the ANSI, and facilitated by the SDO’s under their mutual normal requirements of openness, balance, consensus and due process. These standards are very particular, with safety constantly in mind. Garments in the class 2 standard should be full jacket with sleeves and a hood. Background material must of a fluorescent, reflective material. The color schemes must be vastly different from the working environment that it is used in. The standard suggests a series of fluorescent colors to decide from which include green yellow, orange red and red.
The reflective material itself and how it is used on the garment is regulated as well. One reflective band, rounding the entire torso, should be present and offer visibility at all angles. Reflective arm bands will be placed between the elbow and the shoulder. Another arm band should be located around the cuff of each sleeve.
These garments and especially the reflective material must stand up against abrasion and rainfall. When laundered numerous times the material should retain its reflectivity. A series of tests are performed to ensure all these needs are met. Additionally the material is tested to see how it folds in cold weather and measures the flexibility.
People who wear ANSI compliant material are less likely to be killed or injured by motor vehicles and moving equipment. Organizations, companies and professions that make a requirement of their employees to abide by these standards do so with safety in mind and as their paramount concern. This allows for a more relaxed employee who can concentrate on his or her job knowing that they are adequately protected.
Third-party laboratories test all the garments and material prior to being adopted by the ANSI. There are detailed and specific guidelines that tell these laboratories how each article should be tested. Change for the better is always taking place and the class 2 standards have been revised once already.
