Brand New Nikon D5100 DSLR Camera First Glance

More and more folk are getting into DSLR cameras mostly because the quality over a small aim and shoot is so much greater. Not long ago it cost at least $1000 to get an entry-level DSLR, but now you can get a high quality camera from Canon, Sony or Nikon as an example for a bit less than $1000 simply. The Nikon D5100 is aimed at the lower-mid end of the range, and looks like it may be exceedingly preferred.

The D5100 has so many fantastic features crammed into it, it’s hard to believe it’s less than $1000 complete with an 18-55mm lens. Some of the features include a 16.2MP CMOS sensor, a large three inch moveable viewscreen, in-camera HDR and High Definitiion video with continual auto-focusing!

The D5100 works with all available Nikkor lenses, but will autofocus only with AF-S and AF-I lenses as it doesn’t contain an autofocus motor within the body. This shouldn’t ever pose a problem, just make sure that you buy this kind of lens when upgrading.

The HD picture capacity includes continuing automatic focus, which is truly incredible when you consider it. This is a DSLR camera, and it can be used as a camcorder as well… Very cool. Yes quite a few DSLRs can record video, and even HD; but can those cameras autofocus when taking video or have you got to focus manually? Make sure you check before you buy!

HDR is amazing, but I’ve been having a hard time getting it to work with my aim and click camera. In-camera HDR does all the work for you! 2 bracketed exposures are returned to back, and then the camera combines them into a single HDR image that shows boosted details from shadow and highlights. These shots typically look extraordinary and actually give a ‘WOW!’ factor to your photographs.

Many folks are resolution crazy…. Just because one camera has a higher megapixel ( MP ) count does not mean it’s better. Please remember this when looking for a new DSLR.

Image resolution means the maximum size possible; for this camera it’s 16.2 MP ( megapixels, or thousands of pixels ) or 4928 x 3264. That’s a GIGANTIC image! If you post an image online, typically it’s only about 400 x 300 ; and the scale of your entire desktop on your computer is maybe about 1024 x 768. So what this suggests is that the photos taken by this camera at max resolution are about 4 times larger than you can see at 100% on your desktop screen!

Please note that a larger image doesn’t automatically mean a better image. If you have got a crap camera with a bad lens it takes big photos it doesn’t mean they are good.

Image-quality on the Nikon D5100 fortunately is excellent. Nikon works at keeping shopper level camera quality high so they can compete with Canon and Sony in the ever growing marketplace. Nobody wants to put out a low quality $900 camera, that’s not in doubt.

Is the Nikon D5100 worth buying? Yes, it is! The camera has such a great listing of attributes, quality lenses, and is easy to just pick up and use. Nowadays I find myself recommending Nikon DSLRs over Canon and Sony, and I see no reason to not give the D5100 a huge thumbs up also. If you are ever in need of Nikon digital camera repair or digital camera repair then a fast Google search or two and you need to find exactly what you want.
