What is a good outdoor digital camera?

What is a good outdoor digital camera that takes nice photography pictures and good pics of people too?
My moms could make it to to the bottom of the ocean but the pics look like crap, My dad’s cam makes any pic look amazing but he practically makes me use gloves to use it!
i want to be able to drop it and not freak out. I mean i am going backpacking so it needs to survive!
